The hope is that our consistency will change us or our lives, or even better, the lives of others. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. So let’s talk about something that millions of people are consistent at, drinking coffee every day. Google says that over 50% of Americans drink coffee every day. I can tell you that they enjoy it and they don’t struggle with it. Honestly, I feel that these patterns are partly based in the joy and comfort that coffee provides, but another reason is that it’s an engrained pattern of behavior. If 50% of Americans can be consistent in their coffee fix then I’m sure we can implement a healthy habit that’s just as enjoyable in our lives as coffee.
Maybe for you, it’s not coffee, maybe it’s tea or Red Bull. So I want you to think about this type of consistency. Often, when people think of consistency they relate it to something that’s not easy and what I want to do is give you a new vantage point and imagine consistency as pleasure, not a troublesome task. Pick a food or exercise consistency that you’d love to do or try, like hip hop dancing, meditation, yoga, or swimming. Now pick a healthy food consistency that you’d enjoy, for instance, a healthy smoothie recipe, veggie omelet, sushi, or avocado toast. Next, when you find the one thing, stick with it for a few months and then implement the same idea of 1 food & 1 exercise but change up the items. Maybe take a self-defense class and a healthy lunch that you can stick with for the next three months.
The idea is to get good at showing up so that you’ll have something to optimize. Find a way to stick with it. If you struggle then ask yourself “How” questions. “How can I stay consistent? How can I implement these ideas? What foods do I like that are healthy? How can I show up consistently?” If you’re asking yourself bad questions then you’ll get bad results, so be sure that what you’re asking yourself will take you where you want to go. As you go about your day today, keep these “how” questions present, and if you come up with an answer then be sure to write it down so that you don’t forget.
