As moms, we have a LOT to juggle. We are always trying to do our best for our families, but sometimes it can feel like we’re just running on a hamster wheel. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life and forget to take a step back and appreciate all the good that we have in our lives. But gratitude is so important, not just for our own mental health and wellbeing, but also for setting an example for our kids. When we take the time to show gratitude, we are teaching our kids the value of appreciation.
One of the best ways to show gratitude is simply by expressing it verbally. Whenever you get a chance, tell your kids how grateful you are for them. You can also write them little notes expressing your love and appreciation. Another great way to show gratitude is by doing something special for your kids, even if it’s just taking them out for ice cream or letting them stay up a little later than usual. It doesn’t have to be anything big or expensive; it’s the thought that counts.
It’s also important to show gratitude for your partner or spouse. They are your teammates in this journey called parenthood and they deserve a little recognition! Plan a special date night, write them a heartfelt note, or just do something nice for them out of the blue. Whatever you do, make sure they know how much you appreciate their partnership.
Now, I know that it’s easy to feel grateful when things are going well in our lives. We can all look around and see the many blessings we have been given but what do we do when we find ourselves in a difficult season? This time of year can be especially hard for those who have experienced a recent loss or setback and so I don’t want to leave that out. So, if you find yourself struggling during this time, remember that it’s important to take care of yourself both physically and emotionally. Make sure you’re eating healthy foods, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly. These things will help improve your overall energy and mood. In addition, allow yourself some time each day to do something that brings you joy. This could be reading your favorite book, taking a walk outside, or listening to music. Taking care of yourself will help reduce stress and give you the strength you need to keep going.
Practicing gratitude during tough times can seem impossible but it is possible with effort and time . Allow yourself grace as you work through your emotions and take small steps each day . Seek support from friends, family, and faith if you have one. Things will eventually get better. It’s important for our kids to see us as we go through the good and tougher seasons of life so that they can learn from our example. Be real, be age appropriately transparent with them, and allow them the opportunity to learn how you incorporate thankfulness into your daily life.
This November, let’s make a conscious effort to practice gratitude more often.
